REPRESENTING THE CREATIVE FUTURE SEARCH FOUR STUDENTS DISCUSS:
IF FASHION IS A REFLECTION OF THE ZEITGEIST IS FASHION A DYSTOPIA?
A research project which was then transformed into a long conversation with my classmates at the time Sameerah Balogun, Lucy Olsen and Kiera McMillan and moderated by Natassa Stamouli and which focused on the state of fashion today and discussed the fantasy of fashion in the age of pragmatism.
Monthly research that reflected on how the current sociopolitical landscape (war, covid, Brexit, inflation) was influencing emerging designers and fashion at large by analysing each fashion week (NYFW, LFW, PFW, MFW) on a deeper level- making historical connections, discussing the shows through a more critical approach, and taking the conversation about Fashion Week further than just talking about who went to the shows. (This would be directed and edited by a writer.)
"What does the fashion industry stand for today? Between show gimmicks, celebrity moments, and cross-brand collaborations the industry seems a bit confused when it comes to its values. At a time when our lives unfold in front of a traumatizingly decomposing sociopolitical backdrop, it is impossible to take fashion out of its context. Yet, the last months of fashion happenings demonstrated an eager effort to grasp onto the glimpse of hope (or the illusion of hope) an art form like fashion can possibly provide. How is fashion culture reflecting its times and why we can’t seem to move towards real change when it comes to issues such as sustainability, body inclusivity and diversity?"
